DPhil in Classical Languages and Literature
DPhil title: Sapphic Sisterhood: Classics and Women's Homosociality in the Late 19th and Early 20th Century
I work on women's classical reception and scholarship in the late 19th/early 20th century in relation to modern concepts of gender, sexuality and feminism. I am interested in the role of Ancient Greek themes and homosociality in women's culture (particularly academic and literary) as well as in the development of queer identities, with a focus on queer temporality, Sappho worship and longing for Lesbos. I look closely at the use of Ancient Greek as the language of desire and Sapphic code in literature and life-writing.
I am also the convenor of the St Hilda's feminist salon, a co-convenor of the Oxford Queer Studies Network at TORCH and a member of the Queer Research UK (QRUK) steering group.
